Animation
Online resources for stop motion animation, include:
The Film Education website has a comprehensive resource on animation techniques, history and pedagogy. There is a section with basic advice on stop motion techniques.

Oscar's YouTube channel is full of children's animations and Tony Pickford's YouTube channel contains some children's animations alongside videos made by associate teachers;
Stop Motion Animator is free software for making stop motion animations (Windows XP only); SAM Animation is commercial software, with a limited feature free version for download - for Windows and Mac;
I Can Animate 2 from Kudlian Software is child-friendly, commercial educational software - available for Windows and iOS (iPhone and iPad) at the moment; LEGO® Movie Maker is another very good option for creating stop motion animations on iOS - designed for use with LEGO® figures. iMotion HD is another app for iOS which works well.
Hue Animation Studio is a complete package for making animations, including high quality webcam, software and 'modelling clay' (Windows and Mac).

Scratch
Scratch is a free programming language and online community where you can create your own interactive stories, games, and animations. it uses object-based programming with multiple active objects called sprites. Full support is provided, including a downloadable Reference Guide in PDF format. You can use the online editor to create projects or download Scratch 1.4 for Windows, Mac and Linux.
There is also a simple Getting Started Guide (PDF) and a step-by-step introduction on the Instructables website. Another step-by-step introduction and sample files are available on the EY & Primary Computing site.
